Packaging factories: production visibility and wastage control

In many factories the owner learns the month's output on the first of the next month. Here is how shift-level visibility changes what the owner can do.

We have spent time inside packaging and marble factories, and inside factories across other sectors as a contractor. The productive ones run on skilled supervisors who know every machine. The problem is that this knowledge stays on the floor. The owner gets a monthly total, and the monthly total hides everything.

What the monthly total hides

  • Which shift and which line produced the output, and at what rate.
  • How much material became waste or rejects, and for what reason.
  • How long each machine stood idle and why.
  • Which customer orders are behind and will be late.

Shift-level production tracking

The change is not complicated. At the end of every shift, the supervisor records output, wastage with a reason, and downtime with a reason, from a tablet on the floor. It takes five minutes. The owner sees it that night. Over a month, the pattern is unmistakable: one line, one shift, one material supplier, one recurring reason.

Connecting orders to production and dispatch

The second change is linking what customers ordered to what the floor is producing and what has been dispatched. Promises become visible. A delay is known days before the customer calls, instead of the morning the truck did not arrive.

Every factory has a yield problem. The organised ones know what it is.

A factory system must be simple enough for a shift supervisor and honest enough for an owner. That is the balance we design for. If you run a factory and want to see your real yield, we can start with production tracking alone and grow from there.
