What a tiles and marble business loses without stock and order tracking

Tiles come in lots, sizes and grades. Marble comes in slabs that are never the same twice. Here is why generic software fails these businesses and what works instead.

A tiles showroom and a marble factory look like simple trading businesses from the outside. Buy, stock, sell. From the inside, as anyone who has bought from them for a construction project knows, they are among the hardest businesses to track, and most generic software gives up on them.

Why tiles and marble break generic software

  • A tile is a design, a size, a grade and a lot. Two boxes of the "same" tile from different lots do not match. The system must keep lots apart.
  • Marble is sold by slab and square foot, and every slab has its own dimensions and defects.
  • Orders are partly delivered, partly held, and often adjusted on site. Tracking has to follow the real sequence.
  • Pricing depends on the customer, the quantity and the relationship.

What goes wrong without tracking

The pattern we saw repeatedly: a customer is promised a design, the lot runs out halfway through delivery, the replacement lot does not match, the job stops, and the argument about who pays takes a month. In marble, a slab that was sold is cut for another customer, and nobody knows until the first customer's truck arrives.

What works

A system that speaks the trade's language: stock by lot and slab, reservations against orders, deliveries that reduce the reserved quantity, and a customer ledger that shows exactly what has been delivered, billed and paid. The owner sees stock value by design and lot, and knows which lots are dying on the floor.

In tiles and marble, the stock count is only true if it knows about lots. Everything else is an estimate.

We design systems for this trade from the buyer's side as much as the seller's, because we have been the buyer. If your tiles or marble business is still run on registers, we would like to see how, and show you the alternative.
